Kurils. Lion’s Maw Dubbing on request

Russia Off the Grid • 2025 • 44 minutes

Misha Ronkainen has reached Iturup — the largest and most mysterious island of the Kuril chain. People live squeezed onto a small patch of land that they must even share with bears. Our tireless adventurer’s goal is to conquer a true “bear’s corner” of the archipelago: the hard-to-reach Lion’s Maw Bay, whose shape resembles a giant crab claw. There are no roads, and the only way in is to trust the ocean’s mercy, “waiting on the weather,” as locals say. While the elements decide Misha’s fate, he plunges into the Kurils’ harsh romanticism — fishing for his own “Kuril-style breakfast”, cooking a meal in a “cauldron” heated by volcanic heat, indulging in a natural spa, hunting for postcard-perfect views, and sending a personal greeting to the gray whales!

This journey features wild bears, acidic lakes and, of course, fire-breathing volcanoes. Extreme, even dangerous. But what wouldn’t you risk for the love of adventure? What discoveries await Misha? And will the hot heart of Kamchatka answer his call? Find out in the new episode of the project Russia Out of Range.

Sakhalin. Cape Kril'on Dubbing on request

Russia Off the Grid • 2025 • 44 minutes

Misha Ronkainen has decided to conquer Russia’s largest island — Sakhalin, located on the western edge of the Pacific. It’s a land of harsh seas and a compelling history, once a bone of contention between two empires. Misha’s goal is to reach Sakhalin’s southernmost point, Cape Kril’on. It’s literally the “edge of the land”: a narrow, rocky headland where, like a ship’s bow, you greet the winds and waves of two seas — the Okhotsk Sea and the Sea of Japan. Conditions are harsh, and people are few in every sense — representatives of the most romantic professions who consciously chose a “Robinson Crusoe” life. Along the way, Misha learns what it means to “be Sakhalinized”, discovers the true length of sea kelp, finds out what gets canned here, and learns where you can harvest oysters like mushrooms in an autumn forest. What other discoveries await our tireless adventurer when he finds himself “out of range”?

It’s one of Russia’s cleanest lakes. While tourists may not know of it, locals revere it — considering it energetically powerful. Along the way, Misha visits a farmer who rescues and walks... bears. He meets partisans from the village of Chumka and encounters an elder who issues him a challenge. How will Ronkainen’s journey through this remote region of Russia end?

Along the way, Misha visits residents of the coldest city in Russia, learns how to fight mosquitoes, undergoes a cleansing ritual with a local healer, tastes the Yakut summer, and tests the power of the stones. He’s truly prepared to go through anything in his quest to meet the Northern Shambhala!

In his gripping journey, Misha looks for answers to these questions and meets the remarkable people of Primorsky Krai: passionate scientists, a fisherman-programmer, and even the creator of a film for the Cannes Festival.
