We humans often say that food brings us pleasure. But what do animals feel when they taste food? What flavours do our lesser brothers enjoy? How else do wild animals use their sense of taste? Let’s set off together on an engaging journey to uncover the secrets of animals’ taste preferences. We will explore how an octopus samples the world by touching it with its tentacles, understand why some fish can be called “floating tongues”, and discover why cats do not taste sweetness.

We see the world with our eyes, hear it with our ears, and smell it with our nose. Yet, there is another no less important way of knowing the world — the sense that allows us to feel its texture, warmth, and shape. We speak of touch — a unique sense that accompanies us from birth. After entering the world, we feel a mother’s touch before we see her. In this episode of the Living Senses series, we explore the most unusual animals for whom touch replaces all other senses. To that end, we will observe how walruses hunt using their bristly whiskers, see the kiwi bird using touch to sense prey underground just a few centimeters below the surface, and meet the remarkable rodents — naked mole rats, which do not feel pain and have abandoned sight in favour of touch.

We are surrounded by smells — pleasant and disgusting, strong and barely perceptible, attractive and unbearable. For us, they are merely background, but for many animals, smells serve as a means of communication, a survival mechanism, and even the language of love. In this episode about animals’ sense of smell, we will explore how a shark can detect its prey from several kilometers away, demonstrate how the remarkable stinkhorn fungus deceives flies with a terrible odor, and introduce viewers to the champion of olfactory sensitivity — the unusual African creature, the aardvark.

Where did such a complex mechanism for perceiving the world through vision come from? In the educational series Living Senses, dedicated to sight, we invite viewers on a journey to the ocean floor. There, we will explore the eyes of a jellyfish and provide a chance to see the world as a sea star does. We will meet the mantis shrimp, which can distinguish more than 19 million colours. We’ll learn why vision isn’t very essential for the rhinoceros and the platypus, and we’ll also look around through a dog’s eyes. Additionally, we’ll meet the record-holders for sharp eyesight among Earth’s inhabitants and encounter animals that use not eyes, but ears, to see.

The world around us is full of sounds. But do people and animals hear them in the same way? In an episode of the documentary series Living Senses dedicated to animal hearing, we meet some of the planet’s most unusual inhabitants, whose ability to hear approaches perfection. We learn how bats “see” using their ears and how acute hearing helps owls hunt almost in total darkness. Whales, jellyfish, and electric eels will reveal their hearing secrets to us. And we’ll also understand whom wolves and deer are singing to.
